Cleaning Your Blinds

Blinds are one of the most common forms of window treatments that are found in homes, so it goes without saying that people should know how to clean them. The team at Zinga’s are not only experts in window treatments and determining which will be the best fit, but we’re also experts in knowing how to make the most of them. If you have been struggling with finding a great way to keep your blinds clean, this week’s blog is going to be great. Below are some of the tips that we’ve found make the process much easier and have left blinds looking good as new!

Wood Blinds

When you have wood blinds in your house, it may be a little bit more difficult to notice when they’re in need of some cleaning, at least initially. They might actually be one of the most rewarding blinds to clean, however, after the fact. Wood blinds are treated with a finish that minimizes dirt and repels stains, so cleaning doesn’t always have to be challenging with this style. The best thing that you can do is start by gently spraying them with some diluted vinegar and wiping them down. After that, pour a little bit of furniture polish on a rag and wipe them down. This procedure ensures that they’re clean and have a nice glow after the fact.

Faux-Wood Blinds

Same great look, at a more affordable price, faux-wood blinds have been extremely popular in households for the last couple of years. These windows are just a little bit easier to clean because they won’t require the polishing procedure to get the nice shine. That also means that there are other types of cleaning that you can take advantage of at this point. If it’s just dust that you’re worried about, you can take care of the cleaning process by simply pulling out your vacuum and using the brush attachment. This will easily grab any dust particles and quickly remove them. Close your blinds entirely and vacuum the slats while they’re facing that direction. After that, switch the slats to the other side and vacuum that side. And, just like that, you’re all set. As you do this, do your best to keep away from the drawstrings, because getting too close might push the dust on to the cord and give you some extra work. Now, dust might not be the only thing that you’re trying to clean off of these window treatments. If your faux-wood blinds were in your kitchen, you might also have to consider how you can remove grease from the blinds. At this point, use a solution of diluted vinegar and a cloth to rub the grease with. This solution is fantastic and should get the grease off with little to no effort at all.

Vinyl & Aluminum Blinds

Another option that we can find in quite a few homes still is aluminum and vinyl blinds. They’re fantastic, affordable and they look nice. Both of these window coverings provide you with a few different ways to clean them. Neither one of these options is better than the other, so just make the most of whichever option you prefer. The first method will be the same as faux-wood blinds where you use a diluted vinegar solution and a rag, or you vacuum them. However, aluminum blinds are a little bit different, or at least a little more time-consuming. One of the ways that people have managed to clean many blinds at a time is by removing them and placing them in a bathtub or a small pool outside. Use a combination of dish soap and vinegar and a scrub brush. If you do this, you can easily get grease and dust off of a large quantity of blinds.
